Tesco Part Time Jobs

There are four departments in which one can work at Tesco, but one can apply for part time jobs at Tesco stores as a team leader or a customer assistant.

Team Leader

A team leader is responsible of ensuring that the shelves are filled and that other team members are doing their work. Besides that, a team leader will also make day-to-day decisions on behalf of the team and provide support to the section/department manager.

A team leader will also be involved in coaching new staffs, co-ordinating the team’s rosters and attendance, and delivering key messages.

A team leader should be enthusiastic, hardworking and customer-focused. He should also be a role model for his team members in giving the best service to the customers.

Customer Assistant

A customer assistant’s job is to replenish the shelves, rearranging the products and making sure that they are perfectly displayed. However, the biggest part of a customer assistant is to assist customers. This is done by directing them to a product that they cannot find, or explaining how the customer can make the most of a special offer.

A customer assistant will also support warehouse staff with deliveries, fill promotion ends and merchandising units and ensuring that the store aisles are tidy and clear. Being a customer assistant, one is expected to be friendly, helpful and always ready to serve, hence practising Tesco’s motto, ‘Every Little Helps’.

The flexibility of working at Tesco makes it appealing to students. A shift pattern is assured to fit in to everyone’s schedule. Whether it is night or day, early or late shift, and since shift swapping is allowed, it is a no-brainer why people love working at Tesco.

How to Apply

One can apply for in-store jobs just by picking up an application pack from the nearest Tesco store or by viewing the Application Process page on the website.

Information on new stores can also be obtained from the New Store Openings page on the website.

Training & Development

For students who have finished studying while working at Tesco, available schemes are Apprenticeships in Retail and A-Level Options.

Apprenticeships in Retail

The Retail Apprenticeship is a chance for Tesco staff to gain a nationally recognised qualification awarded by City & Guilds. The programme starts every September in selected stores and lasts 12 months.

A Tesco employee who works for more than 18 hours per week and has been a UK resident for 3 years with indefinite leave to remain is eligible to apply for this scheme. He should not be a full time student or have plans to return to full-time education.

A-Level Options

This programme is a 12-month fast-track management programme for people who have completed their A-Levels (or equivalent). It is preferable that the A Levels is completed in the last 12-18 months.

The programme also provides you with plenty of hands on experience - the sort of grounding that will really stand you in good stead as you progress.

To qualify for the A-Level Options scheme one must have GCSEs in Maths and English, at grade C or above, and 180 UCAS points. The equivalents of this will also be accepted.

Rewards & Benefits

A student who works with Tesco will get a free membership for Students At Tesco online community. At the website, the staff will get advice on money management and interview techniques, plus exclusive discounts for Tesco staff.

Tesco will help in finding a local vacancy for students who wish to work whilst studying or whilst they are on holidays.

After a year of working at Tesco, staffs will get a Privilegecard that gives 10% discount and Clubcard points on most Tesco products.

Future Plans

Tesco plans to provide sponsorship and work experience schemes for students working with them.
