Marks and Spencer Careers

Employment opportunities are thin on the ground at the moment, but for those people with a university degree Marks and Spencer careers might be the answer. If you are newly graduated from college and looking for a start in the retail business then it is worth taking a look at what this world renowned company has to offer. Marks and Spencer are currently running a graduate programme that will give interested parties a thorough understanding of the retail market and how to be a success.

You will join a twelve month induction that involves three or four placements within the company that will provide you with the right grounding in the retail business. This course is especially designed to incorporate class tuition on developing your personal skills and training for leadership and negotiation. When people are in a position of power then they need to know how to successfully manage other members of their team and recognise that negotiation is preferable to confrontation in settling issues and disputes.

When you opt for training towards one of Marks and Spencer’ careers, then expect to be thrown in at the deep end, as you will be making decisions in the real business world on the day you start your training with the company. Once the course is complete then you will have acquired the knowledge that is necessary for a full management role within Marks and Spencer. You could find yourself not only responsible for a particular area of the business, but you may also have responsibility for a team of workers. If you want a career like this, then be prepared for a lot more learning acquired in a short time.

As a graduate you may have a store based role to begin with but it is the company’s policy to place graduates on a fast track scheme to retail management at a very senior level. If you are conscientious and determined to make a success of your extra training then at the end of a year you could find yourself in control of a whole department of a large store, or in charge of one of the smaller Marks and Spencer stores across the country.

If retail isn’t really your thing then the company also runs a graduate programme in human resources, which runs for eighteen months. The programme is designed to play to your strengths and help you to develop the expertise and skills that you will need for a long term career in this area. You can also train to work on skills that are needed at head office, such as IT, purchasing and food or textile technology. Marks and Spencer are looking for people with drive and ambition to take their business forward. If you are interested but have not yet finished your degree then we also run work placements to give future graduates a taste of what it is like to work in the retail world of corporate management.
